Here are some tips on buying a pumpkin to carve:
- Make sure it has firm, smooth skin
- Check to make sure there is at least one even face to make carving easier
- A green stem, make sure it is not brown (or rotting)
- A heavy feel for its size
- No bruises, soft spots, or lacerations on the skin
- After you have carved your pumpkin and it starts to shrivel, it can be revived by putting it in ice water for about an hour.
- Lightly spray the cut surface of your pumpkin with vegetable oil to prevent moisture loss.
